3 Ways How To Attach Tent To Backpack Perfectly

When I was a beginner and started hiking I was not sure how to attach tent to backpack. I used to simply put the tent inside the backpack and this was really big trouble.

Want to know why?

Unfortunately, the reason is the weight and the position of the tent inside the backpack were not right due to which it imbalanced me.

Sometimes, it was too difficult for me to complete my hiking. This is why it is important to understand where and how you should attach the tent to the backpack.

When camping, you should keep the tent inside the backpack just above the sleeping bag when you have a dry tent and when coming back to the home you should attach it outside the backpack with the right weight distribution.

We will cover everything in this article, so keep reading.

Preparing the Tent To Attach WIth backpack

There are few steps that you should follow to perfectly attach the tent to a backpack. These steps are given below.

Make sure that you are using a good quality tent because an old tent is not so good for this procedure.

#1. Lay The Tent

The first thing that you need to do is to lay the tent out on the floor. If the tent has poles then you should pack the poles in the backpack. The poles support the tent when you put it away and you should pack them along the side of the tent (not the center).

#2. Roll It

Make sure that your pole bag along with the side of the tent so that you can roll it properly and the tent stays in a rolled-up position. Then, when you do a few rolls start rolling the tent peg bag which will increase the support of the tent. Now continue rolling the tent to the end.

#3. Open The Tent Bag and Put The Rolled Tent In It

You should always pack a dry tent because it is easier to do and the middle poles on the tent make it easier to handle which provides central support. Also, stuffing a wet tent is hard and it will increase the weight on your shoulder.

Not only this, but it will make your backpack smell bad and then you will have to deodorize the backpack. So, just stay away from keeping a wet tent inside the backpack.

#4. Cover Your Tent In Waterproof Covering

Tents are waterproof but still, you should try to keep the tent stay away from water as much as possible. Because if somehow the tent gets wet then it will be big trouble.

This is why you should keep it in a waterproof material so that the rest of the material and items inside the backpack remain safe.

How To Attach a Tent to a Backpack?

There are various ways that you can use to attach the tent to the backpack but there are a few best ways that I will suggest you use. So that you do not have to face the same problem that I faced.

First thing first, you should always measure the size of the tent and your backpack so that you can decide whether the tent is going to fit in the backpack or not.

We will also cover how you can determine whether the tent is going to fit in the backpack or not later in this article.

There are the three best ways of carrying a tent with your backpack that is given below.

#1. Keep It Inside the Backpack

The first method is the most common one that any new hiker and campers follow. He will simply keep the tent inside the backpack as I did, but it can be a little wrong until he knows how to do it in the right way.

I asked many many of my friends who hike frequently and came to the conclusion: You should pack the sleeping bag at the bottom of the backpack along with your sleeping clothes. Then pack the tent on the top of the sleeping bag along with these collapsible poles (if it has).

You know that the tent is going to be the heaviest item when you are camping and this is an effective and the right way of packing the tent inside the backpack.

Because this method places the heaviest stuff at the bottom of the backpack which can not trouble and disbalance you anymore when you are hiking.

The only disadvantage of this method is that it is best only if your tent is dry. Otherwise, it is not a good idea to pack a wet tent inside the backpack.

So, if you are leaving your home to go hiking with your friends and family then you should use this method. Otherwise, I will suggest you use the second method to attach the tent to the backpack.

#2. Use the Straps To Attach the Tent To Backpack (My Favorite)

Many hikers often use the straps to attach the tent to the backpack and I am pretty sure you must have also seen it somewhere. This is another effective way that you can use to carry a tent with you. Many hiking backpacks do provide an external frame with a bottom section that is specially designed for the sleeping bedroll or tents.

So, if your backpack has such a type of external frame then you can use this method perfectly.

You need to attach the end of your tent to the end straps of the backpack that are designed to hold it properly and then use the laces given in the backpack to wrap around the tent which will again help to keep the heaviest item at the bottom of your bag.

The only disadvantage of this method is the bumping of the tent on the backs of the legs if your backpack is not designed to rest the bulky stuff across the hips.

So, these are the two best methods that you should be using to carry the tent with the backpack. But there is one more method that I want to share with you.

And here we go!

#3. Use the Centre Backpack Method

Many internal frame backpacks do provide a top compartment or section for carrying large items inside the backpack. You can use this to pack your tent in it and the best thing about these sections is that they do help in centralizing the weight of the tent across the shoulder.

In this method, you position your tent vertically down the center of the backpack using the compression straps. The straps hold the tent in place and make sure you fasten properly so it does not slip/loose from your bag.

However, this method is not suggested by the manufactures because according to them the straps are made to reduce the weight of the backpack and keep it evenly distributed.

If you follow this method then you can keep your tent secure from being snagged as you hike.

Conclusion

In conclusion, you can attach the tent to the backpack using the backpack attachment straps, and the compression belts. You can put the tent inside the backpack which can keep it protected from the rain.

The position of the tent on the backpack matters a lot. You can place it on the top where all the weight of the tent will be distributed over the shoulder.
Also, you can attach it to the bottom of the backpack, but the only drawback here is that it can be a little problematic when you walk because there are chances that the tent bumps into the back of your legs.
